Writing on good paper feels different from writing on cheap paper, and the difference shows most with a fountain pen. If you write by hand every day, the notebook is a tool you use for hours, so it is worth choosing with some care.

India has a long tradition of handmade paper. In Sanganer, on the edge of Jaipur, the Kagzi community of papermakers has worked for centuries; the Gaatha craft archive records that "in the 16th century the then ruler of Amber, Raja Man Singh brought the Kagzis to Sanganer and settled them on the bank of the river Saraswati, where clean water was easily available." Much Indian handmade paper is made from cotton rag, the same material conservators prefer for long-lasting art paper. The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts describes rag paper as "made of long fibers, usually cotton" and "in general, it is strong, long-lasting, and of a superior quality to other papers, particularly for use in fine art."

This guide covers what to look for in the paper and three notebooks we checked on 6 October 2026.

What makes good paper

Three things matter in a notebook. In order of importance, they are the paper, the binding and the cover.

Paper weight (GSM). GSM is the weight of a sheet in grams per square metre. Many handmade notebook listings do not state it. The Purpledip journal below gives no figure, so the reliable test is a page written with your own pen.

Fibre. Rag paper is made from long cotton fibres, which is why conservators rate it as strong and durable. Check the listing for what the pages are made of, since some notebooks sold as cotton rag use it only on the cover.

Bleed-through and ghosting. Bleed-through is when ink soaks through to the other side of the page. Ghosting is when you can see a faint shadow of the writing on the other side. Good paper keeps both to a minimum, and both are easy to check on the first page of a new notebook.

Three kinds of Indian notebook

Indian notebooks fall into three broad groups.

Handmade artisan notebooks. These use handmade paper from centres such as Sanganer, Pondicherry and Kalpi in Uttar Pradesh. The Uttar Pradesh ODOP portal describes Kalpi's paper as "produced using traditional paper-making techniques and recycled raw materials". In Pondicherry, Sri Aurobindo Handmade Paper says that "off-cuts of white cotton rag are the main raw material in our handmade paper, sourced from the textile industry in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu". Covers are often printed cloth. In the listings we checked on 6 October 2026, handmade notebooks cost from ₹399 to about ₹2,300. Pages are often unruled. The Purpledip journal below has 44 unruled sheets.

Branded machine-made notebooks. Indian stationery brands such as Nightingale sell hardbound notebooks with machine-made paper and consistent sizes. They suit daily office use. When we checked Nightingale's Amazon store on 6 October 2026, every notebook listed there showed as currently unavailable.

School exercise books. These are the cheapest option and are made for schoolwork. This guide does not cover them.

Specific picks

Top Pick · Handmade

Purpledip "Jaipur Blossoms" handmade paper journal

via Amazon · Block-print fabric cover · Thread closure · 7 × 5 inches · 44 unruled sheets

₹399

Purpledip's listing describes "beautiful handmade paper diary with block-print fabric cover" and says "the thick pages are made of cotton & the cover design is in traditional Indian Rajasthani Sanganeri patterns." The journal has 44 unruled sheets, so it suits sketching and freeform writing better than lists. It measures about 7 by 5 inches and closes with a thread. Purpledip notes that each cover differs because it uses recycled fabric. Sanganeri Hand Block Printing is a registered Geographical Indication (application 147, certificate dated 19 March 2010); the listing does not say whether the cloth comes from a registered producer. On 6 October 2026 it cost ₹399 and Amazon showed only one left in stock, so check before you order.

Eco Pick · Cotton rag cover

It is the cheapest notebook here and the only ruled one, which makes it the practical choice for daily notes. It cost ₹249 and was in stock on 6 October 2026.

A note on pens

If you want to use a fountain pen on handmade paper, these three pens cover a range of budgets. On 6 October 2026 Amazon India listed the Lamy Safari (Umbra, fine nib) at ₹3,999 and the Pilot Metropolitan at ₹2,749 to ₹2,800, depending on colour and nib. Kokuyo Camlin's Trinity fountain pen cost ₹140.

Caring for handmade paper

  • Handmade paper absorbs ink differently from machine-made paper, so give each line a few seconds before you touch it. Left-handed writers may want a blotting sheet.
  • Keep notebooks dry and out of the rain.
  • Stored dry, rag paper lasts. The University of Illinois Preservation Self-Assessment Program states that "rag paper lasts hundreds of years under normal use."
